Repair or replace

Most toilet problems are cheap to fix

The internals of a toilet are simple and inexpensive. A flapper, a fill valve, a flush valve and a handle account for the overwhelming majority of what goes wrong, and all of them are repairable at modest cost on a sound fixture.

The exception is anything structural. A cracked tank or bowl cannot be repaired, and a toilet that rocks is usually telling you the flange underneath has failed rather than anything about the toilet itself. Those are different conversations, and we will be clear about which one you are having.

The one thing worth acting on quickly is a running toilet. A flapper that does not seat can pass a startling volume of water continuously without any visible sign beyond a slightly higher bill. It is among the cheapest repairs in plumbing and among the most expensive things to ignore.

  • Running, leaking and weak-flushing toilets
  • Fill valve, flapper and flush valve replacement
  • Wax ring and flange repair
  • Clog clearing and repeat-blockage diagnosis

Common faults

What usually goes wrong

Most of these are an hour and inexpensive parts.

It keeps running

Almost always a flapper no longer sealing or a fill valve that will not shut off. Cheap to fix and expensive to leave, because it runs continuously.

Water on the floor

Could be the supply connection, the tank-to-bowl gasket, or a failed wax ring. Where it appears tells us which, and only one of those involves lifting the toilet.

Weak or incomplete flush

Often mineral build-up blocking the rim jets, sometimes a flapper closing too early. Both are correctable without replacing the fixture.

It rocks

Usually the closet flange rather than the bolts. Tightening it down harder cracks porcelain, so this is worth doing properly.

Clogs repeatedly

If it blocks weekly, either the trap design is poor, something is lodged in it, or the branch drain has a problem further down.

Phantom refilling

The tank topping itself up with nobody using it means water is escaping past the flapper. Same fix as a running toilet, caught earlier.

Our process

How a repair visit goes

Diagnose, price, fix. Usually one visit.

1

Find the actual fault

Running, leaking and flushing problems have overlapping symptoms and different causes. We test rather than guess, because replacing the wrong part solves nothing.

2

Quote before we start

You get the price before work begins, including whether we think a repair is genuinely worth it on a fixture of that age and condition.

3

Repair and verify

Parts replaced, then the toilet run through repeated cycles while we check for leaks at the base, the tank bolts and the supply connection.

When repair stops making sense

We will repair a toilet where repair is the sensible answer, and say so where it is not. The line is usually one of three things.

Cracked porcelain. There is no repair for a cracked tank or bowl. Sealants fail and the eventual failure mode is a sudden release of water, not a slow drip.

Repeated rebuilds. If a toilet has already had its internals replaced once or twice and is back with the same complaint, something else is going on, often mineral content attacking the parts or a fixture that was poor quality to begin with.

Very old low-flow units. Early 1990s low-flow toilets were genuinely bad, and no amount of repair makes them flush properly. If yours needs two flushes every time, that is the design, and replacement is the fix.

The running toilet nobody notices

A flapper that does not quite seat will pass water continuously. It often makes no noise you would notice and leaves no visible sign, which is precisely why it goes unnoticed for months.

The cheapest test costs nothing: put a few drops of food colouring in the tank and leave it without flushing. If colour appears in the bowl within fifteen minutes, the flapper is leaking.

Fixing it is one of the least expensive plumbing repairs there is. Leaving it is one of the more expensive things you can do passively, and it shows up on every bill until it is dealt with.

How much does toilet repair cost?
Most internal repairs are among the least expensive jobs we do, since the parts are inexpensive and the work is quick. Our plumbers quote per job once they have identified the actual fault, and you approve before work starts. MVP members take 10% off.
Why does my toilet keep running?
Nearly always the flapper or the fill valve. The flapper hardens with age and stops sealing; the fill valve fails to shut off completely. Both are quick, inexpensive replacements and both waste a great deal of water until sorted.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace?
Repair, in most cases, unless the porcelain is cracked, the fixture has already been rebuilt repeatedly, or it is an early low-flow model that never flushed properly. We will tell you which situation you are in.
My toilet rocks. Can you just tighten it?
Tightening the bolts on a rocking toilet risks cracking the base, and it does not address the cause. Rocking usually means the closet flange has corroded or sits below floor level, and correcting that properly is the actual fix.
Can you fix a toilet that clogs constantly?
Yes, once we work out why. It might be an object lodged in the trap, mineral build-up narrowing the passage, a poor original design, or a problem in the branch drain beyond the toilet. The fix depends entirely on which.
