What backflow is
A backflow preventer stops your water supply flowing the wrong way
Your water is supposed to travel in one direction: from the main into the building. Backflow is when that reverses — usually because pressure in the main drops suddenly, from a water main break, heavy fire department draw, or a burst nearby. When it does, water can be siphoned back out of the property and into the public supply.
That matters because of what the water may have been in contact with on your side of the meter: irrigation lines sitting in fertiliser and soil, boilers, chemical injectors, commercial equipment. A backflow preventer is a mechanical device that stops that reversal. Because it is mechanical, it wears, and because the consequence of failure is contaminated drinking water, water providers require it to be tested on a schedule — typically annually.
The test itself is short. Most of the value is in having someone certified do it, catch a failing device before it fails, and file the results with your provider so you stay compliant without chasing it.

Irrigation systems
The most common reason a residential property has a backflow device. Sprinkler lines sit in soil and fertiliser, which must never reach the drinking supply.
Commercial properties
Most commercial premises are required to have backflow protection, and requirements are stricter and more actively enforced than residential.
Fire suppression systems
Buildings with fire sprinkler systems typically require backflow protection on that connection, tested on its own schedule.
Restaurants and food service
Dishwashers, carbonation equipment and chemical dispensers all create cross-connection risk, so these properties are closely regulated.
Medical and dental offices
Equipment that draws or mixes water creates contamination risk, and these premises typically require higher-grade protection.
Wells with a public connection
Any property with both a private well and a public water connection requires protection so the two systems cannot cross-contaminate.

How the testing works
Short visit, and we take the administration off your hands.
Test the device
A certified tester connects a gauge to the device and checks that each check valve and the relief valve hold correctly under pressure. Water is briefly shut off during the test, which usually takes well under an hour.
Certify and file
If the device passes, we complete the certification and submit it to your water provider so your compliance record stays current. You get a copy for your own records.
Repair or replace if it fails
If it does not pass, we tell you exactly which component failed and what it takes to correct it. Many devices can be rebuilt rather than replaced, which is usually the cheaper answer.
What happens if you do not test it
Requirements and enforcement vary between water providers, so the specifics depend on who supplies your property. Generally, providers send a notice when a test is due, and failing to comply can lead to escalating notices, fees, and in persistent cases interruption of water service. Commercial accounts tend to be pursued more actively than residential.
The practical risk is worth separating from the administrative one. An untested device is not necessarily a failing device — but you have no way of knowing, and these are mechanical assemblies with rubber seats and springs that degrade. A device that has quietly failed provides no protection at all while still appearing to be installed.

Testing, repair and replacement
A test is not a repair. If a device fails, the next question is whether it can be rebuilt or needs replacing, and that mostly depends on the type, age and condition of the assembly. Repair kits exist for most common devices, and rebuilding is generally considerably cheaper than a new assembly.
Replacement becomes the sensible answer when a device is obsolete, corroded beyond a rebuild, or has been repaired repeatedly. It is also sometimes required when the property use changes and a higher grade of protection becomes necessary — converting a space to food service being the common example.
