The main supply

One pipe, every fixture

Your main water service line runs from the meter at the street to where the supply enters the house. Everything downstream of it depends on it, so when it starts to fail the symptoms show up across the whole property rather than at one fixture, which is exactly what makes it easy to misdiagnose.

The failure modes depend on what it is made of. Older galvanised steel service lines corrode internally until flow drops noticeably. Polybutylene, common in homes built between the late 1970s and mid 1990s, becomes brittle and fails without much warning. Copper can develop pinhole leaks, particularly where soil chemistry is aggressive.

Because the line is buried, a leak often shows as a soggy patch, an unexplained jump in the water bill, or a meter that keeps moving with everything in the house shut off. That last test is the most useful one you can run yourself.

  • Main service line replacement, meter to house
  • Galvanised, polybutylene and copper replacement
  • Leak location before excavation
  • Restoration scope agreed before work starts

Symptoms

Signs your main water line is failing

These affect the whole house at once, which is the tell.

Pressure dropped everywhere

Not one fixture, all of them. Gradual loss across the whole property points at the service line closing up internally rather than a fixture problem.

Water bill jumped

A buried leak runs continuously. A sudden rise with no change in usage is one of the clearest indicators there is.

Meter moves with everything off

Shut every fixture and watch the meter. If it still creeps, water is escaping between the meter and the house. This is the single best self-test.

Soggy or sunken ground

A persistently wet strip between the street and the house, or ground that has settled along that run, usually means the line is leaking below.

Discoloured water

Rusty or brown water, particularly on first draw, suggests corrosion inside a galvanised service line.

Known polybutylene

Grey plastic pipe from roughly 1978 to 1995. It fails unpredictably and some insurers treat it as a known risk.

Our process

How a replacement runs

Locate first, agree the route, then dig.

1

Confirm and locate

We verify the leak is in the service line rather than inside the house, and locate the run so any excavation goes in the right place and no wider than it needs to be.

2

Agree route and restoration

New lines can often be routed to avoid driveways and mature landscaping. You get told which route we recommend, what surface is affected and what making good is included.

3

Replace, pressure test, restore

New service line installed to code, pressure tested, connections made at the meter and the house, then the ground and any hard surface restored to the agreed standard.

Trenching or trenchless

Open trench is straightforward and often the most economical where the run crosses lawn. The trade-off is surface disruption along the whole length.

Trenchless replacement pulls a new line through with entry and exit pits rather than a continuous trench. Where the run passes under a driveway, a patio or mature planting, avoiding that excavation can be worth considerably more than the difference in method cost.

Which is viable depends on the route, the depth, the soil and what is already buried nearby. We will tell you honestly which options apply to your property rather than quoting one method as though it were the only one.

Who is responsible for which section

In most cases the property owner is responsible for the service line from the meter to the house, and the utility is responsible for the main and the connection on their side. The exact boundary varies by jurisdiction, and Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco are not identical.

This matters because it determines who pays. Part of diagnosing a suspected service line leak is establishing where the leak sits relative to that boundary. If it is on the utility side, the right next call is to them rather than to us, and we will tell you that.

It is also worth checking whether your homeowners policy or your water provider offers service line coverage. Some do, many homeowners do not realise they have it, and it can change the arithmetic on a replacement significantly.

Answers

Water line questions

Diagnosis, responsibility, disruption and cost drivers.

Still have a question?Call or text and talk to a real plumber, not a call center.(813) 576-8639
How do I know the leak is in the main line and not inside?
The meter test is the quickest check. Shut off every fixture and appliance in the house, then watch the meter. If it continues to move, water is escaping between the meter and the house. We can confirm and locate it precisely from there.
How much does a water line replacement cost?
It depends on the length of the run, the depth, what surface it passes under and whether trenchless is viable. Our plumbers quote per job once the route has been assessed. Wisetack financing is available up to $25,000 on qualifying work.
Will you have to dig up my driveway?
Not necessarily. Where the line runs under a driveway or patio, trenchless methods can often avoid breaking it. Whether that is possible depends on the route and conditions, and we will tell you before quoting rather than after.
How long will my water be off?
Usually part of a single day for the changeover itself, though the overall job may run longer depending on excavation and restoration. You will get a realistic schedule as part of the scope.
Am I responsible for the line from the street?
In most cases yes, from the meter to the house, with the utility responsible beyond it. The boundary varies by jurisdiction, so establishing where the fault sits is part of the diagnosis.

Book a water line assessment

Run the meter test first if you can, and tell us the result. It narrows the diagnosis considerably before we arrive.
